Senate

The Senate of the University consists of :

  1. The Vice-Chancellor.
  2. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
  3. The Principal.
  4. The Academic Secretary.
  5. The Dean of Students.
  6. The University Librarian.
  7. Deans and Deputy Deans of Faculties and Schools.
  8. Directors of Institutes and Centers.
  9. Heads of Departments.
  10. Professors from various faculties.
  11. Two students chosen by the Students' Union.

Powers and Duties of the Senate

  1. The functions of the Senate are:
    1. To regulate the academic requirements for the admission of students to courses in the University and for the award of prizes.
    2. To be responsible for the general regulation of courses of study and of examinations held by the University.
    3. To provide for courses of extra-mural studies.
    4. To confer degrees and to grant diplomas, certificates and other distinctions to persons who have pursued a course of study approved by it in the Regulations.
    5. To confer honorary degrees and other distinctions on persons deemed worthy thereof in accordance with the Regulations.
    6. To promote research.
    7. To report to the Council on any matter referred to it for report by that body and to make any recommendations it may think fit on any other matter relating to the University.

     

  2. The Senate has power to:
    1. Create and appoint committees to deal with matters relevant to its functions and powers.
    2. To provide for the creation and appointment of Boards of Studies to assist it and the Faculty Boards in consideration of academic matters.
    3. To deprive any person who has been convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude or who, in its opinion, has been guilty of dishonorable or scandalous conduct, of any degree or other distinction conferred by itself and of all privileges enjoyed by him in virtue of such degree or other distinctions provided that:
      1. every person so deprived shall have the right to appeal to the Council against the decision of the Senate, and the council's decision thereon shall be final.
      2. the Senate shall have power to restore to any person any degree or other distinctions or any privilege of which he may have been deprived.
    1. The Senate makes regulations for conduct of its own business and for the proper discharge of the functions and powers conferred on it by or under the Act of the University.
    2. Such regulations come into force when signed by the Vice-Chancellor unless some other later date is therein prescribed.
    1. The Senate shall meet at such time and places as it may determine, provided that the Vice-Chancellor shall have power to call a meeting at any time.
    2. In the absence of the Vice-Chancellor his Deputy presides over the meeting of the Senate. In case of the absence of both theVice-Chancellor and his Deputy, the Senate elects one of its members present to preside over the meeting.
    3. The Senate has the power to invite any person to attend any meeting or part thereof, provided that such person has no power to vote.

 

Committees of Senate

The Senate may, from time to time, by election from amongst its members, constitute committees and entrust to such committees any of its functions.
