 President, 6 May, 1986 - 30 June, 1989 Ahmed Ali Al-Mirghani - (1941 - ) - A sudanese political and religious sect leader. Born in Khartoum North on August 16, 1941. He graduated from the University of London. He became a prominent figure after the transitional government of president Siwar Al-Dhab in which he handed over the government to civillian rule in April 6, 1986. He became the elected Head of State of the third democratically elected government of The Sudan, with Sadig Al-Mahdi as his Prime Minister until the June 30, 1989 Coup detat lead by General Omer Albashir. He currenlty resides in Egypt leading the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) comprising of several opposition parties fighting the current regime in The Sudan. He also co-founded the Islamic Development Corporation and the Sudanese Islamic Bank. |
