Sudan: No Food Gap in Current Year Sudan Vision - February 16
Khartoum – Strategic Reserve Administration expected that there will be no food gap in the crops for 2012 harvest season.
Strategic Reserves General Administration in Agricultural Bank, Faisal Hassan Mohammed affirmed to Sudan Vision that the agricultural season was satisfactory and promising that there will be no food gaps considering that the production of sorghum exceeded by 26% from last season, expecting that the sorghum stock of the crop will reach 6 million tones this season in rainfed areas.
He pointed out that the wheat crop is expected to reach 50 thousand tones and this necessitates importing the crop to fill the gap.
He revealed 2013 season plan which will provide strategic reserve of about 500 thousand tones of sorghum and 1000 tonnes of wheat besides 150 tonnes of millet, adding the problems of the strategic reserve lies in the depots capacities.
He disclosed that the strategic reserve is attached to the Agricultural Bank considering it as the biggest investor in agricultural field.
He concluded that the concern over the product provides the supply to the consumer through creating a kind of abundance besides the direct support of the government.
